Hermès Scarf 90 cm – Les Amériques – Kermit Oliver (1992)

Issued only once and never reissued, this rare design depicts the meeting of two worlds: the Old and the New. The dense, symbolic composition tells, in its own way, a chapter in the history of the American continent.

Art and History of this Hermès Scarf
Can one think of Hermès in America without mentioning Kermit Oliver? The first American artist to collaborate with the house, this former Texan postal worker with a passion for history, theology and symbolism stands out for his erudite, deeply narrative style.
With Les Amériques, Oliver does not give in to folkloric imagery but pays tribute to the great pre-Columbian civilisations – Maya, Aztec, Inca, Taíno. To the east of the composition, Christopher Columbus stands in all his majesty, beneath the world map of Henricus Martellus (1489), accompanied by his caravels and the coat of arms that Isabella the Catholic would grant him.
To the west, a richly adorned indigenous king welcomes the conqueror under the gaze of the protective jaguar and the ancient deities. At his feet lie the riches of the New World: codices, calendars, fruits, gold and obsidian. The scarf also hints at the myth of the god Quetzalcoatl, whose return had been foretold… from the west.
An erudite, deeply spiritual scarf that finely weaves together history, beliefs and civilisations.
